Air Temperature:  81 and only 84 for a high today
Humidity:  81%
Wind Direction & Speed:  East at 6-10
Tide Stage:  High at 7 AM an dlow at 12:30 PM
Moon Phase:  Last quarter
Water Conditions:  Really nice and clear even with the tannins.

Today I was just relaxing in the gazebo of the marina before doing some water qulity sampling for ORCA.

Notice the Water Color

Water color tells a story.

💚 Green often means healthy phytoplankton.

💙 Dark water may simply reflect depth.

🤎 Brown water often follows heavy rain as tannins wash downstream.

Crystal clear water isn't always the healthiest water. The lagoon is constantly changing.

Today I'm working at River Rocks on the bank of the Indian River lagoon in Rockledge FL just north of Melbourne.

Carry a Small Trash Bag

Whether you're fishing, kayaking, or taking an evening walk, tuck a grocery bag in your pocket.

If everyone picked up just five pieces of litter each visit to the lagoon, thousands of pounds of trash would stay out of our waterways every year.

The lagoon belongs to all of us.

Water Conditions:  Calm and clear in the cove

Today's Lagoon Life:

I started the day at a beach clean up at the inlet state park.

Then I was winding my way up the lagoon and had to hit a Melbourne classic.  Mustards Hotdogs.  2 really good chili dogs for lunch today!

Then I was off to hear a lecture from the Florida Oceanographic Society about sea grass.  It was hosted by the Marine Resources Council at the Lagoon House in Palm Bay.

The Ted Moorhead Lagoon House is the welcome center for the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway. The building is owned by the City of Palm Bay and run by the Marine Resources Council. The property features a mangrove nursery, native rain gardens, and a short trail with Lagoon overlooks.

Notice the Mangroves

Mangroves are some of the hardest-working plants on the lagoon.

They quietly:

• 🐟 Provide nursery habitat for young fish
• 🦀 Shelter crabs and shrimp
• 🌊 Help reduce shoreline erosion
• 💧 Filter pollutants from runoff
• 🐦 Offer nesting and roosting sites for birds

The next time you're kayaking or walking the shoreline, take a moment to appreciate these remarkable coastal forests. They're one of the reasons the Indian River Lagoon supports such incredible biodiversity.

Today I was busy working with people and trash.  I didn't get to notice any wildlife in general but I did see 1 guy catch a nice sized black drum while walking at the jetty.

Indian River Land Trust

One of the quiet success stories along the Treasure Coast is the Indian River Land Trust. Since its founding, the organization has worked to protect the open spaces, waterways, and wildlife habitats that define Indian River County. Its mission is simple yet powerful: conserve land and water for the benefit of today's residents and future generations.

Air Temperature:  86 - high of 90
Humidity:  76%
Wind Direction & Speed:  SW at 8 MPH
Tide Stage:  Low at 8:30 AM and High at 2 PM
Moon Phase:  Waxing Gibbous - rise at 11 PM and set at 11 AM.
Water Conditions:  Low with cloudy water.  Watch the video to see the difference from when I was filming snook 2 weeks ago.

Today's Lagoon Life:

Last week was the lobster mini season here in Florida.  The 29th and 30th and lots of people head down to the keys to go lobster diving.  You can keep 6 per person in the keys and 12 in all other parts of the state.

It's also the last week for the local school kids to get on summer vacation.  After this week things get real quiet down here for 2 months until the snow birds start coming back.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Fish the Moving Water

Whether you're fishing or simply watching wildlife, moving water is almost always more productive than still water.

Around the Indian River Lagoon, keep an eye on:

• 🌊 Tidal creeks flowing into the lagoon
• 🌉 Bridge pilings during a tide change
• 🌾 Channels between seagrass beds
• 🦐 Current lines where baitfish gather

Moving water brings oxygen and food, making it a natural gathering place for fish, dolphins, birds, and other wildlife. If you learn to read the current, you'll start seeing the lagoon in a whole new way.

Wildlife & Nature

A fair number of birds down on the water today.  A heron feeding on the shoals of bait fish swimming near the shore.  Staying safe from snook puts you into the birds mouth.

Most importantly I caught a nice little sea trout today.  First one in the time I've been living at Pelican Landing.  Yeah me!

Restore Our Shores

One of the most hands-on conservation efforts along the Indian River Lagoon is Restore Our Shores, a program of the East Coast Zoological Foundation, the nonprofit behind the Brevard Zoo. Their mission is to restore native ecosystems through practical, science-based projects that improve water quality and strengthen shoreline habitats.

Their volunteers work on projects that have a direct impact on lagoon health, including:

• 🦪 Growing oysters that naturally filter lagoon water
• 🌱 Raising and planting red mangroves
• 🌿 Restoring native seagrass beds
• 🦪 Building oyster reefs and living shorelines
• 🌾 Installing shoreline buffer zones that reduce nutrient runoff
• 🤝 Training residents to become active stewards of the lagoon

One of my favorite aspects of Restore Our Shores is that they make conservation accessible. You don't have to be a marine biologist to make a difference. Whether you're helping build an oyster reef, raising mangroves at home, or volunteering for a planting day, you're contributing to the recovery of one of North America's most diverse estuaries.

Spend Time Outside the House Before You Buy

It's easy to focus on the kitchen, bathrooms, and finishes, but don't forget to spend a few minutes standing outside.

Pay attention to:

• 🌅 The direction the backyard faces for morning coffee or afternoon shade.
• 💨 Whether there's a nice breeze coming off the water.
• 🚗 Traffic noise with the windows closed and open.
• 👋 How neighbors interact with each other.
• 🚶 Whether people are out walking, biking, or enjoying the neighborhood.

Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Today is the month and WEEKEND report for July.

Lagoon Conditions

Time:  9AM
Air Temperature: 84 with a high of 88
Humidity:  72%
Wind Direction & Speed:  W at 8-10
Tide Stage:  Low at 6:30 AM and High at noon
Moon Phase:  Full with a rise at 9:30 PM and set at 8:30 AM
Water Conditions:  Low, flat but a muddy bottom seems to permeate

Today's Lagoon Life:

When walking and you find a fruit that is called prickly pear and you see that it is edible next read further as to why it is called prickly pear.  I did not and ate half of it and then got little barbs in my hands and lips for the day.  Lets hope they don't hook to other things along their path.  FUN!

If I would have read after the first few sentences I would have known more.  I know now!

• Ripe fruit: The bright red-purple color indicates the fruit is ripe and ready to harvest, typically tasting sweet and similar to a blend of watermelon or strawberry. [1]
• Caution needed: The small white bumps (areoles) on the fruit and pads feature tiny, barbed hair-like spines called glochids that require thick gloves to handle safely. [1, 2]
• Uses: Both the fleshy pads (nopales) and these sweet fruits are widely used in cooking, jams, and drinks. [1, 2, 3]

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Keep a Pair of Binoculars in Your Car

The Indian River Lagoon is full of unexpected wildlife moments.

A pair of compact binoculars can turn an ordinary stop into an unforgettable experience.

You might spot:

• 🦅 An osprey diving for breakfast
• 🐬 Dolphins working a school of baitfish
• 🦩 Roseate spoonbills feeding along a shoreline
• 🐢 A sea turtle surfacing for air
• 🦉 An owl tucked into an oak hammock at dusk

You'll be amazed how much more you notice when you can slow down and take a closer look.

Wildlife & Nature

Here is a cute video of a small rabbit hiding out in the living shoreline that I help to maintain with ORCA. 

Below are 3 wood storks having some breakfast at the living shoreline too.    Mostly minnows but they will snap up crustaceans to if they run into one while "grope feeding".

Marine Discovery Center

The Indian River Lagoon stretches 156 miles, and one of its outstanding educational organizations is the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach. For more than 25 years, the center has inspired residents and visitors to appreciate and protect the lagoon through education, conservation, and exploration.

Their mission is beautifully simple:

"To protect our coastal ecosystems through education, conservation, and exploration."

What makes the Marine Discovery Center special is that learning isn't confined to a classroom. They invite people to experience the lagoon firsthand through:

• 🛶 Guided kayak and pontoon eco-tours
• 🌿 Citizen science and shoreline restoration projects
• 🦪 Oyster shell recycling and habitat restoration
• 🧪 Water quality monitoring
• 🐴 Horseshoe crab and seagrass surveys
• 🏫 School field trips, summer camps, and Florida Master Naturalist programs
• 🤝 Hundreds of volunteers who help educate and restore the lagoon every year

Organizations like this are creating the next generation of lagoon stewards. Every child who catches their first seahorse in a dip net or paddles through a mangrove tunnel leaves with a deeper connection to Florida's incredible estuary.

Buy for Your Lifestyle, Not Just Your Square Footage

A larger home isn't always a better home.

Don't leave the lagoon.  I'm super glad to be back home and on the lagoon after a 1 day trip to Lakeland to do some real estate work.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Learn to Spot Juvenile Fish

The Indian River Lagoon serves as a nursery for countless marine species. Around docks, mangroves, and seagrass beds you'll often see tiny versions of fish that later move offshore or into deeper water.

Look for:

• 🐟 Schools of juvenile snook
• 🐠 Baby mangrove snapper
• 🌿 Needlefish gliding along the surface
• 🦐 Shrimp darting through the grass
• 🦀 Tiny blue crabs along the shoreline

The more young fish you see, the healthier that habitat is likely to be. Protecting nursery areas today helps sustain tomorrow's fishing.

Marine Resources Council

If there is one organization that has been a constant champion for the Indian River Lagoon, it's the Marine Resources Council (MRC). Founded in 1983, MRC works across the entire lagoon system with a mission centered on science, education, and advocacy. Their goal is simple but ambitious: protect, restore, unite, and promote the Indian River Lagoon coastal community.

Some of the ways they make an impact include:

• 🧪 Conducting and supporting scientific research
• 💧 Training citizen scientists to monitor water quality through the LagoonWatch program
• 🌱 Restoring mangroves and living shorelines
• 🏫 Educating students, homeowners, and community groups
• 🤝 Organizing volunteer projects and community stewardship events
• 📢 Advocating for science-based solutions that improve lagoon health

One thing I especially appreciate is that MRC doesn't stop at identifying problems. They give residents practical ways to become part of the solution, whether that's volunteering, planting mangroves, monitoring water quality, or making lagoon-friendly choices at home.

Daily Lagoon Life Report from Lakeland, FL. – July 24, 2026

Good morning from Lakeland, FL.

Part of what's great about south Florida is all of the adventures that you can go on.  Today I started at the ORCA nursery in Vero Beach.  Then I went home and packed up and drove across the state using FL 60 which is a great old school diagonal road in FL.  There aren't many of those.  Check out my driving video HERE.

My trip included downtown Fellsmere.  Once the center of a huge local orange industry.  They grew and picked them out there and the made them into juice and shipped them in Vero Beach.  Once you leave Fellsmere you see what's left of the orange industry before you hit a few cattle ranches and then you head to lake Worth and the Florida ridge.  Yes, there are highlands down there center of Fl like a spine.

Then all of the sudden you drop into the greater Orlando area which bleeds directly into Tampa anymore via Lakeland.

Good morning from Pelican Landing in Sebastian along Florida's Indian River Lagoon.

Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Water Conditions:  Flat and calm with minnows rippling the surface

Today's Lagoon Life:

Today the bait fish are everywhere.  The occasional mullet jumping through the air and the occasional snook popping the water surface eating a mouth full of those bait fish!  The blue heron, egret and great blue heron working the shore are a testament to the food in the water.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Learn the Names of Your Feathered Neighbors

One of the pleasures of living along the Indian River Lagoon is recognizing the birds you see every day.

Challenge yourself to identify just five common species:

• 🦅 Osprey
• 🐦 Great Blue Heron
• 🦢 Great Egret
• 🪶 Brown Pelican
• 🩷 Roseate Spoonbill

Once you know their names, you'll start noticing their behaviors, favorite habitats, and even the seasons when they're most active. The lagoon becomes much richer when its wildlife feels familiar instead of anonymous.

St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park

Spanning more than 22,000 acres across Indian River and Brevard counties, the St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park protects one of the largest remaining natural landscapes in east-central Florida. While it's managed as a state park, its mission goes far beyond recreation. The preserve safeguards wetlands, pine flatwoods, scrub habitat, floodplains, and the headwaters that feed the St. Sebastian River, which ultimately flows into the Indian River Lagoon. Healthy headwaters are essential for healthy downstream waters.

The preserve offers opportunities to:

• 🐦 Observe birds, deer, gopher tortoises, and other wildlife

Good morning from Pelican Landing in Sebastian along Florida's Indian River Lagoon.

Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Lagoon Conditions

Time:  11:30 AM
Air Temperature:  88 and a high of 91
Humidity:  91% - sticky!
Wind Direction & Speed:  West at 5-7
Tide Stage:  High at 9 AM and Low at 4 PM
Moon Phase:  Waxing Gibbous - rise at 7 PM and set at 4 AM.
Water Conditions:  Low with low visibility.  Lots of much seen on the bottom.

Today's Lagoon Life:

Everything was pretty quiet today.  It was close to mid day and even nature knows its best to be under cover or in the shade in the afternoon on a Florida summer day.

Become a Citizen Scientist

You don't need a science degree to help protect the Indian River Lagoon.

Many local organizations welcome volunteers to:

• 🐦 Count birds during seasonal surveys
• 🌿 Plant native vegetation
• 🦪 Restore oyster reefs
• 🧪 Monitor water quality
• 🚮 Remove litter from shorelines
• 📸 Document wildlife observations

Spending a few hours volunteering is a wonderful way to learn more about the lagoon while making a meaningful contribution to its future.

One Lagoon

Protecting a 156-mile estuary takes teamwork, and that's exactly what One Lagoon is all about. Rather than being a single nonprofit, One Lagoon is a collaborative initiative that brings together local governments, scientists, businesses, conservation organizations, educators, and residents with one shared goal: restoring and protecting the Indian River Lagoon. Through public education, restoration projects, volunteer events, and community partnerships, the initiative helps connect people with opportunities to make a real difference.

Good morning from Sebastian along Florida's Indian River Lagoon.

Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Lagoon Conditions

Time:  10 AM
Air Temperature: 82 with a high of 87
Humidity:  83%
Wind Direction & Speed:  NE at 5 MPH
Tide Stage:  High at 6:30 AM and Low at 2 PM
Moon Phase:  Waxing Gibbous - rise at 5 PM and set at 2 AM
Water Conditions:  Low and clarity improving.  Light ripple on the surface that is wind driven

Today's Lagoon Life:

Holy cow was there nature everywhere this AM!  Cormorants, blue heron, white egret, ducks, turns, woodpeckers,, gulls, pigeons.  Lord have mercy.  Not to mention a whole clan of pinfish & red mangrove seed pods.  Also a nice wolf spider came to say hello on the fish cleaning station.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Keep a "Lagoon Bag" Ready to Go

One of the best parts of living here is that an ordinary afternoon can suddenly become the perfect time to head for the water.

Keep a small bag packed with:

• 🧴 Sunscreen
• 🧢 A hat
• 🔭 Binoculars
• 💧 A reusable water bottle
• 📷 A camera or phone charger
• 🦟 Insect repellent

When the weather is right or dolphins are spotted, you'll be ready to enjoy the lagoon without having to plan a big outing.

Indian River Land Trust

Protecting the Indian River Lagoon isn't only about restoring water quality. It's also about protecting the land that surrounds it.

The Indian River Land Trust (IRLT) works to conserve waterways, open spaces, and natural landscapes throughout Indian River County. By partnering with landowners and the community, the Trust has permanently protected thousands of acres of environmentally significant land, including stretches of the St. Sebastian River, helping preserve wildlife habitat, improve water quality, and expand public access to nature. Their mission is to protect, improve, provide access to, and promote the preservation of waterways, open spaces, and green places for today's residents and future generations.

Their work includes:

• 🌿 Conserving environmentally sensitive lands
• 🚶 Creating public trails and nature preserves
• 🐦 Protecting wildlife habitat
• 🌊 Preserving river corridors and lagoon shorelines
• 🤝 Working with private landowners on voluntary conservation easements
• 🎓 Offering educational programs and guided nature experiences

One of my favorite ideas behind the Land Trust is that conservation and public enjoyment can go hand in hand. Every preserved property gives wildlife a place to thrive while giving residents another opportunity to experience Old Florida.
