The birds have my attention today. They have taken over our dock at the restaurant! A whole community hanging out today.
Rain is coming and coming soon. The weekend temperatures are going to be nice but the winds off shore are going to be awful Captain Jimmy told me. He is happy about the expanded Red Snapper season this year.
Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:
Take a Kid Fishing
Not because you're necessarily trying to produce the next great angler.
Because putting a child beside the Indian River Lagoon with a fishing rod creates an opportunity to explain what's underneath that water.
Seagrass. Mangroves. Oysters. Baitfish. Dolphins. Manatees. Snook. Tarpon. And the complicated little ecological web connecting all of them.
There's actually a perfect opportunity in Indian River County this Saturday. The Environmental Learning Center is hosting a free Family Fishing Day on Saturday, September 26, led by the Wabasso School of Fishing. Young anglers receive hands-on instruction right along the Indian River Lagoon.
It's easier to convince someone to protect a lagoon after they've spent a morning falling in love with it. 🎣🌊

Today's Indian River County Do-Gooder: United Against Poverty
We've spent several days talking about organizations helping the environment around Indian River County.
Today let's talk about one helping the people who live in it.
United Against Poverty has its roots right here in Indian River County. The organization was incorporated in 2003, originally developing a model designed around helping people move toward economic self-sufficiency rather than simply providing emergency assistance.
Today its Indian River County campus is at 1400 27th Street in Vero Beach.
And what happens there goes considerably beyond a food pantry.
UP provides crisis assistance, case management, education, employment training and placement, personal empowerment programs and referrals to other community services.
One particularly interesting piece is its Member Share Grocery Program.
The concept grew from a small grocery operation in southern Indian River County where people experiencing financial hardship could obtain deeply discounted food and household products while still purchasing the groceries themselves. The idea was to preserve both choice and dignity rather than simply handing someone a predetermined box of food.
💙 Why They Matter
Real estate gives us an interesting lens for looking at an organization like this.
We talk endlessly about housing affordability.
But whether someone can afford to remain in a community isn't determined solely by their mortgage or rent.
It's groceries.
Transportation.
Employment.
Childcare.
Utilities.
An unexpected car repair.
And the thousand other small financial currents running through a household every month.
United Against Poverty attacks several of those problems at once, with the larger goal of helping people become economically self-sufficient.
That's an important part of Lagoon Living too.
Because a healthy community isn't merely clean water, beautiful houses and great fishing.
It's whether the people who cook our meals, teach our children, repair our homes and keep the community running can build lives here too. ❤️🏡🌊
