Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Today's Lagoon Life:
Todays video was shot on Sat while i was hanging at the pool here at Barefoot. This whole weekend was a bit about exploring what goes on around here. Sat I went for a bike ride and ended up getting a haircut for $18 at a salon that is in the neighborhood in the shopping center where there is also a convenience store and a restaurant!
I also stopped in on the way home from work for the music at the pool on Friday and Saturday. Nice pool side stage.
And in case that's not enough look at the activities in the neighborhood this month and this is the off season!

Become an Oyster Farmer Without Owning a Farm
Here's a particularly good Lagoon Living opportunity for waterfront residents.
Brevard Zoo's Restore Our Shores program has opened registration for its 2026-2027 Oyster Gardening season. Participants who have suitable lagoon-front property can help grow and monitor oysters that will eventually contribute to restoration efforts.
Oysters are remarkable little pieces of biological infrastructure. They filter water while oyster reefs provide habitat for fish, crabs and other lagoon creatures. Restore Our Shores combines oyster restoration with work involving clams, mangroves, seagrass and living shorelines.
And if you don't have a dock, you're not benched. The program also recruits volunteers for reef building and other restoration projects.
Some people garden tomatoes. Around the Indian River Lagoon, apparently we can garden oysters. I rather like that. 🦪🌊

Featured Community Do-Gooder: Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition
Since the Dock Report now originates from Barefoot Bay, we're going to keep exploring some of our new neighbors to the north.
Today's is the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization devoted specifically to building public support for restoring the Indian River Lagoon.
The Coalition played an important role following the devastating 2016 lagoon fish kill, helping educate Brevard residents about what was happening and supporting the voter-approved Save Our Indian River Lagoon half-cent sales tax.
That program is still producing restoration work today. Brevard County reports that its Save Our Indian River Lagoon initiative has now completed 140 projects, with efforts aimed at reducing nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, removing legacy nutrients and restoring natural filtration systems.
But here's what I particularly like about the Coalition.
Its job isn't primarily to plant mangroves or build oyster reefs.
It's to help ordinary people understand what everyone else is doing.
The Coalition works with a network of environmental organizations and agencies and hosts educational efforts including its Lagoon Straight Talk programs, where residents can hear from experts and ask questions about lagoon restoration.
💙 Why They Matter
Restoring something as enormous and complicated as the Indian River Lagoon requires scientists, engineers, governments, nonprofits and thousands of volunteers.
But it also requires something less glamorous:
public understanding.
People are far more likely to protect something when they understand what's wrong with it, what's being done about it and whether those efforts are actually working.
That's the niche the Coalition occupies.
And there's a fascinating bit of timing here. The original Brevard lagoon sales tax approved in 2016 is scheduled to appear before voters for a 10-year renewal in November 2026.
So over the next couple of months, understanding the lagoon's problems, projects and progress becomes particularly relevant for those of us living on the Brevard side of it.
A healthy lagoon needs clean water. It also needs an informed neighborhood. 🌊🧠

Find Out Whether the House Is on Sewer or Septic
It's easy to tour a house, admire the kitchen and never give much thought to where everything goes after you flush the toilet.
In Florida, that's worth knowing before you buy.
If the property has a septic system, ask about its age, location, maintenance history and when it was last pumped or inspected. Also find out where the drain field sits. That matters if you're dreaming about adding a pool, garage, patio or other improvement later.
If the property is already connected to municipal sewer, ask whether there are any remaining connection charges or assessments attached to the property.
This has an extra wrinkle around the Indian River Lagoon because aging or poorly functioning septic systems can contribute nutrients to groundwater and ultimately the lagoon. Brevard County's Save Our Indian River Lagoon program specifically includes septic-to-sewer and septic-system projects among its pollution-reduction efforts.
A buyer should know where the drinking water comes from and where the other water goes. Neither is particularly glamorous. Both matter. 🚽🏡
