Good afternoon from the living shoreline in Sebastian, FL along Florida's Indian River Lagoon. Today is Tuesday September 15, 2026.
Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.
Lagoon Conditions
Time: 1:30 PM
Air Temperature: 86 with a high of 89
Humidity: 76%
Wind Direction & Speed: NE at 10 MPH
Tide Stage: 8AM low and 1:30 PM high
Moon Phase: Waxing Crescent - rise at 11;30 AM and set at 10 PM
Water Conditions: Slight chop with the wind direction and look how high the tide is at the shoreline. I've never seen the oyster balls all under water.
Today's Lagoon Life:
Today I had to run to town. I like saying that living up here in Barefoot Bay. Heading into the big city of Sebastian. =)
Since I was down in town I stopped by to check the living shoreline since I cant get here on Wednesday AM to help these days. I'll be back and this Saturday is the beach clean up with many of the same folks!
Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:
Anchor in Sand, Not Seagrass
If you're boating around the Indian River Lagoon, take a few seconds to look beneath the boat before dropping the anchor.
Seagrass beds aren't underwater weeds. They're extraordinarily productive habitat, providing shelter and feeding areas for fish, crabs, shrimp, manatees and other lagoon wildlife.
Anchors, chains and propellers can tear through those beds and leave scars that take a long time to recover. When possible, look for a sandy patch and anchor there instead.
It's one of those wonderfully simple conservation decisions that costs absolutely nothing.
Sometimes protecting the lagoon is simply moving the boat twenty feet. ⚓🌱🌊

Featured Community Do-Gooder: Promise in Brevard
As we continue expanding the Dock Report's neighborhood north from Barefoot Bay into Brevard County, today's organization is a particularly interesting one.
Promise in Brevard is a nonprofit community in West Melbourne created to give adults with cognitive, developmental and physical disabilities something most of us probably take for granted:
the opportunity to have a home and an independent adult life.
Promise, Inc. was established in 2009, and its West Melbourne community opened several years later. Today, 125 adults with disabilities live there.
But this isn't simply affordable housing.
Residents have access to transportation, independent-living education, health and fitness programs, vocational training and employment assistance. There are more than 60 activities available each week, and more than half of Promise residents are employed at approximately 30 businesses around the area or through Promise's own social enterprises.
That's the part I really like.
The goal isn't merely to create somewhere safe for people to live.
It's to create somewhere they can have neighbors, jobs, friendships, routines, responsibilities and choices.
In other words, a community.
💙 Why They Matter
There's an interesting connection here to real estate, too.
We spend an enormous amount of time talking about housing in terms of bedrooms, bathrooms, interest rates and property values.
But at its most basic level, housing provides something much bigger: independence.
Promise was created partly in response to a difficult question faced by parents of children with disabilities: What happens to my son or daughter when I'm no longer able to care for them?
Their answer was to build a place where those sons and daughters could build lives of their own.
And they've gone a step further with businesses such as Aves' Place in West Melbourne, a café, bakery, boutique and event space that helps support Promise while also employing residents.
I think this is exactly the sort of organization worth discovering as our little Dock Report travels farther into Brevard.
A good community isn't merely a collection of houses. It's a place where more people get the chance to belong. ❤️🏡

Check the Survey Before You Fall in Love With the Backyard
A fence is not necessarily a property line.
Before buying, particularly if you're imagining a pool, shed, boat parking, expanded driveway or new fence, review the property's survey and understand exactly where the boundaries and easements are.
Utility and drainage easements can limit what you can build. An older fence may wander across the actual property line. A neighbor's shed, driveway or landscaping may even encroach onto the property you're considering.
This becomes especially important with Florida's smaller lots, where five or ten feet can completely change what you're able to do with the backyard.
The seller can show you the backyard. The survey tells you which part of it you're actually buying. 📐🏡
