Good Morning from The Indian River Lagoon in Florida

Good morning from the dock along the Indian River Lagoon in Sebastian, Florida. Here’s your WEEKEND waterfront weather, fishing, and wildlife report for Friday July 17, 2026.

We got a good rain last night, at least up in Melbourne.  I was set to do some volunteer gardening at the yoga garden in Eu Gallie but the lightning ran us off.  It cooled things off a bit and I don't think we are even scheduled to hit 90 today!  You know that the thing about the tropics.  We don't have as big of temperature swings as the temperate zones.  We are consistently warmer but when it gets hot up there it gets hotter than here.  At night it is quite pleasant now.

Warm and still this AM on the dock and part of my report shows how quickly the invasives have returned to the shoreline where I recently cleared them.

🌤 Waterfront Weather Conditions

Time: 11 AM

Air Temperature: 81°F - high of 89

Humidity: 80%

Wind Direction & Speed: SW at 2 MPH - not enough!

Tide Stage: Low at 8 AM and High around 1 PM

Moon Phase: Waxing crescent - rise at 10 AM

Water Conditions: Low, calm, flat and low visibility.  Maybe from all the rain we and even more so, inland have been getting.

Lagoon Living Tip for the Day:

The Best Wildlife Viewing Happens When You Slow Down

Many visitors race from one attraction to the next. Residents know the lagoon rewards patience.

Sit quietly on a dock, shoreline, or observation deck for 15 minutes and you'll often notice:

  • 🐬 Dolphins surfacing without warning
  • 🦅 Ospreys diving for fish
  • 🐟 Mullet schools rippling the surface
  • 🐢 A turtle poking its head above the water
  • 🦩 Wading birds stalking breakfast along the shallows

The lagoon has its own rhythm. Sometimes the best experience comes from doing less, not more.

🎣 Fishing Activity & Wildlife Sightings

The schools of minnows are everywhere between the dock and the shore line.  I cant tell if they are glass minnows or greenies.  I can't seem to get them with my cast net so maybe they are still glass minnows.

🌊 Indian River Lagoon Spotlight

Brevard Zoo Restore Our Shores

Most people know the Brevard Zoo for its animals, but one of its most meaningful conservation efforts happens out in the Indian River Lagoon. Restore Our Shores is a volunteer-driven habitat restoration program that builds oyster reefs, plants mangroves, and restores shorelines throughout the lagoon. These projects improve water quality, reduce erosion, and create habitat for fish, crabs, birds, and countless other species.

Volunteers work alongside scientists and conservation staff to:

  • 🦪 Build oyster reefs that naturally filter lagoon water
  • 🌿 Plant mangroves to stabilize shorelines
  • 🌊 Restore living shorelines instead of relying solely on seawalls
  • 🎓 Educate residents about lagoon ecology
  • 🤝 Engage thousands of community volunteers each year

One mature oyster can filter dozens of gallons of water each day, so every restored reef becomes a small but powerful water treatment system created by nature. Programs like Restore Our Shores demonstrate that restoring the lagoon is something the entire community can participate in.

🏡 Lagoon Real Estate Suggestion of The Day

Flood Zones Don't Tell the Whole Story

When shopping for a home on Florida's Treasure Coast, don't stop at asking, "Is it in a flood zone?"

Also ask:

  • Has the home ever experienced flooding?
  • How high is the finished floor elevation?
  • Have there been insurance claims?
  • Are there swales or retention ponds nearby?
  • Has the seller made drainage improvements?

Two homes on the same street can have very different histories. Understanding both the flood maps and the property's real-world experience helps you make a smarter decision.
