Good morning from the dock along the Indian River Lagoon in Sebastian, Florida. Here’s your daily waterfront weather, fishing, and wildlife report for Tuesday June 23, 2026.

Today I'm off at Riverview Park downtown to the site of our Buffered and Living Shoreline.  Today was in conjunction with CCA, the Coastal Conservation Assoc, the same people who co-hosted the fishing tournament this weekend.

While we were there we installed 150 50-pound oyster reef balls and 150 Sparatina grasses that live above the waterline but are tollerant of seawater.

Tide Stage: Low at 12:30 AM and High around 6:30 PM

Water Conditions: Flat, calm, and clear

Most residents check the weather. Longtime lagoon residents check the sky.

A quick glance upward can tell you a surprising amount:

  • Ospreys hovering often indicate baitfish activity.

  • Brown pelicans diving suggest schools of fish below.

  • Frigatebirds soaring high overhead can signal offshore feeding activity.

  • Egrets and herons gathering along shorelines often point to changing tides.

The lagoon is constantly giving clues. The birds are often the first to know what's happening beneath the surface.

 

🎣 Fishing Activity & Wildlife Sightings

The bait fish were jumping but we were so busy working I didn't do a lot of wildlife viewing.  One thing you couldn't miss was a bull shark cruising up and down the beach.  The dorsal fin never broke the water but you could see the silhouette of its body being traced by the water as it swam along.

Friends of St. Sebastian River

The Friends of St. Sebastian River is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to protecting and enhancing the St. Sebastian River and its watershed, one of the most important tributaries feeding the Indian River Lagoon.

Their work includes:

  • River and shoreline cleanups

  • Environmental education

  • Habitat protection

  • Community outreach

  • Advocacy for responsible stewardship

  • Support for local conservation initiatives

Why does this matter?

 

Everything that happens upstream eventually affects the lagoon. Healthy rivers mean cleaner water, healthier fisheries, stronger seagrass beds, and better wildlife habitat throughout the entire estuary.

One of the hidden gems along the Treasure Coast is finding homes that enjoy water views, lagoon access, or nearby waterfront amenities without carrying the full price tag of direct waterfront ownership.

  • Distance to a public boat ramp

  • Community docks or marina access

  • Walking distance to the Indian River Lagoon

  • Nearby parks and fishing piers

  • Insurance and maintenance costs
