Good Morning from Florida's Indian River Lagoon

Good morning from Sebastian Saltwater along Florida's Indian River Lagoon in Sebastian FL.  Today is Thursday October 8, 2026.

Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Lagoon Conditions

Time:  10:30 AM
Air Temperature:  79 with a high of 86
Humidity:  82% - sticky!
Wind Direction & Speed:  East at 3-5

Today's Lagoon Life:

Tons of bait fish in the water today.  Glass minnows, greeniens, various sized mullet with ladyfish, snook and tarpon around snapping them up.  At one point it sounded like a grown man had fallen into the water a tarpon hit so hard.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

October Doesn't Mean You Have to Fertilize!

Indian River County's annual summer fertilizer restrictions ended September 30.

That means homeowners can resume certain fertilizer applications, but being allowed to fertilize doesn't mean your lawn needs it.

Under the county ordinance, fertilizers containing nitrogen must have at least 50% slow-release nitrogen. Phosphorus generally cannot be applied without a documented soil or plant deficiency. Fertilizing before significant rainfall or on saturated ground is also prohibited. Indian River County

Why does this matter?

Excess nutrients wash into storm drains, canals and ultimately the Indian River Lagoon, where they can contribute to algae blooms and declining water quality.

Before reaching for the fertilizer bag, consider whether your lawn actually needs additional nutrients.

Better yet, gradually replace high-maintenance turf with Florida-friendly landscaping.

The healthiest lawn for the Lagoon might be the one you don't fertilize at all. 🌱🌊

Today's Indian River County Do-Gooder: Shining Light Garden Foundation

Today's featured organization combines three things that make a community healthier:

Farming, volunteering and feeding our neighbors.

And its story begins with one man growing vegetables in his backyard.

🍅 From a Backyard Garden to 20 Acres of Giving

In 2008, Joel Bray began sharing vegetables from his backyard garden with people who needed food.

The more he gave away, the more he wanted to grow.

That little garden eventually became Shining Light Garden, a nonprofit farm covering more than 20 acres in the Winter Beach area of Indian River County. Shining Light Garden

Today, volunteers help grow, harvest and distribute fresh vegetables to local food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, veterans' organizations and programs serving seniors.

And here's the remarkable part:

100% volunteer. 100% donations. 100% given away.

That's the organization's operating philosophy. Shining Light Garden

🌻 They Grow Flowers, Too

One of my favorite details about this organization is that they don't just grow food.

Shining Light Garden also maintains a flower garden that provides fresh flowers for patients at VNA Hospice House.

Imagine that.

One section of the farm grows vegetables to nourish people.

Another grows flowers to brighten someone's final days.

The organization also reports planting more than 250 mango and avocado trees to expand its fruit production. Shining Light Garden

🌱 An Entire Community Helping One Another

The Garden Club of Indian River County has supported Shining Light Garden, including a $10,000 contribution toward refrigeration equipment to keep harvested produce fresh until distribution.

That is community cooperation at its best.

Gardeners helping farmers.

Farmers helping food pantries.

Food pantries helping families.

And volunteers making the whole thing possible. Garden Club of Indian River County

🌊 What Does This Have to Do With the Indian River Lagoon?

Perhaps more than you might initially think.

We often discuss environmental stewardship in terms of water quality, oyster restoration, seagrass and mangroves.

But there's another side to ecology.

Human beings are part of the ecosystem, too.

A healthy community needs access to nutritious food, productive land and opportunities for people to contribute.

Shining Light Garden demonstrates what happens when people take responsibility for their little corner of the world.

They plant something.

They nurture it.

They harvest it.

And then they give it away.

No complicated business model. No shareholders expecting quarterly earnings.

Just people growing food for other people.

And sometimes that's enough to make a remarkable difference.

The most beautiful thing growing at Shining Light Garden might not be the vegetables. It might be the community around them. 🍅❤️🌱

Flood Zone X Doesn't Mean Flood-Proof

One of the first questions Florida homebuyers ask is, "Is this house in a flood zone?"

The answer is always yes, technically. Every property has some degree of flood risk.

What buyers usually mean is whether the property lies in a high-risk flood zone requiring flood insurance for certain mortgages.

But here's something worth knowing.

According to the National Flood Insurance Program, nearly one-third of flood insurance claims between 2014 and 2024 came from properties outside high-risk flood zones. Floodsmart

Before purchasing a home in Sebastian or Vero Beach, check the FEMA flood maps, investigate any history of flooding, and obtain an actual flood insurance quote.

Remember, most standard homeowners insurance policies don't cover flooding. FLOIR

A house doesn't have to be waterfront to become waterfront during a Florida rainstorm. 🌧️🏡
