Today's Lagoon Life:

Holy mackerel.  Water and wind everywhere.  Todays video is from the living shoreline that I work on and it has taken a serious hit.  All of the hundred of Sparatina grasses we planted are all gone.  Sadness.  Plus the water is up above the rocks and into our land side garden.  Most wil recover but it is sad to see.

In addition these are photos from where I used to live and the water is practically up to the dock!  I planted hundreds of mangroves out there last year and I'll be surprised if any of them make it either.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Lagoon Living Tip | Reel It In, Recycle It!

Discarded monofilament fishing line is a preventable danger to pelicans, sea turtles and other Indian River Lagoon wildlife. It is thin, strong and can remain in the environment for years.

When you fish, retrieve loose line when it is safe to do so and place clean monofilament in designated recycling tubes at participating piers, ramps and marinas. Keep hooks and weights out of the recycling tube.

Today’s tip: Take home a little more discarded fishing line than you brought. It could save an animal’s life.

Wildlife & Nature

Today is all about water!  Everywhere.  When they say coastal flooding they mean it.

Today's Lagoon Spotlight

Indian River Lagoon Insight | Coastal Connections

Coastal Connections is a Vero Beach nonprofit founded in 2017 to protect sea turtles and coastal ecosystems through education, conservation and community action.

Its programs include beach cleanups, fishing-line recycling and sea turtle education. During the September 2026 International Coastal Cleanup, more than 1,300 volunteers collected roughly 4,863 pounds of debris across 26 Indian River County sites.

Why it matters: This organization turns appreciation of our coastline into hands-on stewardship. Residents can join a cleanup, volunteer or support conservation programs.

Lagoon Lifestyle & Real Estate

Real Estate Tip | The Seller’s Tax Bill May Not Be Yours

Florida’s Save Our Homes assessment limitation can keep a longtime homeowner’s taxable value well below market value. When that property sells, its assessed value generally resets the following year, subject to exceptions.

Eligible Florida homeowners may qualify for homestead portability when moving between primary residences.

Today’s tip: Estimate your own future property taxes before buying a home in Indian River County. Do not rely solely on the seller’s current bill.
