Today's Lagoon Life:
I started at work and then took off to go see a friend of mine from ORCA deliver a talk on the Lagoon health. While at the MRCs Lagoon House in Melbourne I ran across this sign which shows how storm water is filtered before re entering the lagoon. The main thing they want to reduce is Nitrogen and Phosphorous as that is how we get the big algal blooms that cause fish kills. Interesting info was learned by me.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:
After this week's historic flooding, the Indian River Lagoon is receiving runoff from streets, lawns, canals and drainage systems.
That runoff can carry fertilizers, bacteria, petroleum products and other pollutants into the water. Even when the surface looks clear, water quality may remain affected.
Today's tip: Avoid swimming or allowing pets into recently flooded waterways. Keep debris, chemicals and yard waste out of storm drains. Our lagoon needs a little extra care after a storm like this.
Wildlife & Nature
I saw 2 dolphin playing in the marina this AM which is always exciting! I also saw my first hint of minnows in the water which is encouraging as things have been so rough and choppy I haven't seen a living creature in the water for weeks it seems.
Today's Lagoon Spotlight
Located on Wabasso Island in Vero Beach, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) introduces residents and visitors to the remarkable ecosystem of the Indian River Lagoon.
Its 64-acre campus features nature trails, boardwalks, aquariums, a touch tank and educational programs for children and adults. Visitors can also explore the lagoon through guided pontoon boat excursions and paddling adventures.
Founded in 1988, this nonprofit helps people understand why protecting our coastal environment matters.
Why they matter: People are more likely to protect what they know and appreciate. The ELC helps create the next generation of lagoon stewards.

Lagoon Lifestyle & Real Estate
If you're purchasing a primary residence in Sebastian, Vero Beach or elsewhere in Indian River County, remember two important dates.
To qualify for Florida's 2027 Homestead Exemption, eligible homeowners generally must own and occupy their property as their permanent residence by January 1, 2027.
The application deadline is March 1, 2027.
The exemption can reduce taxable property value, while Florida's Save Our Homes benefit can limit future increases in assessed value.
Today's tip: If you're buying a home before the end of the year, don't overlook your homestead eligibility. A little paperwork could save you money for years to come.
