Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Lagoon Conditions
Time: 9AM
Air Temperature: 84 with a high of 88
Humidity: 72%
Wind Direction & Speed: W at 8-10
Tide Stage: Low at 6:30 AM and High at noon
Moon Phase: Full with a rise at 9:30 PM and set at 8:30 AM
Water Conditions: Low, flat but a muddy bottom seems to permeate
Today's Lagoon Life:
When walking and you find a fruit that is called prickly pear and you see that it is edible next read further as to why it is called prickly pear. I did not and ate half of it and then got little barbs in my hands and lips for the day. Lets hope they don't hook to other things along their path. FUN!
If I would have read after the first few sentences I would have known more. I know now!
- Ripe fruit: The bright red-purple color indicates the fruit is ripe and ready to harvest, typically tasting sweet and similar to a blend of watermelon or strawberry. [1]
- Caution needed: The small white bumps (areoles) on the fruit and pads feature tiny, barbed hair-like spines called glochids that require thick gloves to handle safely. [1, 2]
- Uses: Both the fleshy pads (nopales) and these sweet fruits are widely used in cooking, jams, and drinks. [1, 2, 3]

Keep a Pair of Binoculars in Your Car
The Indian River Lagoon is full of unexpected wildlife moments.
A pair of compact binoculars can turn an ordinary stop into an unforgettable experience.
You might spot:
- 🦅 An osprey diving for breakfast
- 🐬 Dolphins working a school of baitfish
- 🦩 Roseate spoonbills feeding along a shoreline
- 🐢 A sea turtle surfacing for air
- 🦉 An owl tucked into an oak hammock at dusk
You'll be amazed how much more you notice when you can slow down and take a closer look.
Wildlife & Nature
Here is a cute video of a small rabbit hiding out in the living shoreline that I help to maintain with ORCA.
Below are 3 wood storks having some breakfast at the living shoreline too. Mostly minnows but they will snap up crustaceans to if they run into one while "grope feeding".
Today's Lagoon Spotlight
Marine Discovery Center
The Indian River Lagoon stretches 156 miles, and one of its outstanding educational organizations is the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach. For more than 25 years, the center has inspired residents and visitors to appreciate and protect the lagoon through education, conservation, and exploration.
Their mission is beautifully simple:
"To protect our coastal ecosystems through education, conservation, and exploration."
What makes the Marine Discovery Center special is that learning isn't confined to a classroom. They invite people to experience the lagoon firsthand through:
- 🛶 Guided kayak and pontoon eco-tours
- 🌿 Citizen science and shoreline restoration projects
- 🦪 Oyster shell recycling and habitat restoration
- 🧪 Water quality monitoring
- 🐴 Horseshoe crab and seagrass surveys
- 🏫 School field trips, summer camps, and Florida Master Naturalist programs
- 🤝 Hundreds of volunteers who help educate and restore the lagoon every year
Organizations like this are creating the next generation of lagoon stewards. Every child who catches their first seahorse in a dip net or paddles through a mangrove tunnel leaves with a deeper connection to Florida's incredible estuary.
