Everything was pretty quiet today.  It was close to mid day and even nature knows its best to be under cover or in the shade in the afternoon on a Florida summer day.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Become a Citizen Scientist

You don't need a science degree to help protect the Indian River Lagoon.

Many local organizations welcome volunteers to:

  • 🐦 Count birds during seasonal surveys
  • 🌿 Plant native vegetation
  • 🦪 Restore oyster reefs
  • 🧪 Monitor water quality
  • 🚮 Remove litter from shorelines
  • 📸 Document wildlife observations

Spending a few hours volunteering is a wonderful way to learn more about the lagoon while making a meaningful contribution to its future.

Wildlife & Nature

Today was pretty quite besides some mullet jumping around and a blue heron did fly in during my video filming.

Today's Lagoon Spotlight

One Lagoon

Protecting a 156-mile estuary takes teamwork, and that's exactly what One Lagoon is all about. Rather than being a single nonprofit, One Lagoon is a collaborative initiative that brings together local governments, scientists, businesses, conservation organizations, educators, and residents with one shared goal: restoring and protecting the Indian River Lagoon. Through public education, restoration projects, volunteer events, and community partnerships, the initiative helps connect people with opportunities to make a real difference.

Some of the ways One Lagoon supports the community include:

  • 🌊 Coordinating lagoon restoration efforts across multiple counties
  • 🌱 Promoting native landscaping and fertilizer best practices
  • 🦪 Highlighting oyster reef and seagrass restoration projects
  • 🤝 Connecting volunteers with local conservation organizations
  • 📚 Providing educational resources for residents, teachers, and students
  • 📅 Sharing community events focused on protecting the lagoon

What makes One Lagoon especially valuable is that it reminds us no single organization can restore the lagoon alone. Success comes from thousands of people making small, positive contributions that add up over time.

Lagoon Lifestyle & Real Estate

Don't Forget to Budget for the First Year

Many buyers focus on the down payment and monthly mortgage, but the first year of homeownership often comes with additional expenses.

Plan ahead for things like:

  • 🔧 Minor repairs and maintenance
  • 🌴 Landscaping or tree trimming
  • 🪟 Window treatments
  • 🪑 Furniture and storage
  • 🛠️ Basic tools and emergency supplies
  • 💡 Utility deposits or service upgrades

Setting aside a "new homeowner fund" can make the transition much smoother and help you enjoy your new home instead of worrying about unexpected costs.
