Good Morning from Florida's Indian River Lagoon

Good morning from Sebastian along Florida's Indian River Lagoon.  Today is Monday August 3, 2026.

Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.

Lagoon Conditions

Time:  11 AM
Air Temperature:  86 - high of 90
Humidity:  76%
Wind Direction & Speed:  SW at 8 MPH
Tide Stage:  Low at 8:30 AM and High at 2 PM
Moon Phase:  Waxing Gibbous - rise at 11 PM and set at 11 AM.
Water Conditions:  Low with cloudy water.  Watch the video to see the difference from when I was filming snook 2 weeks ago.

Today's Lagoon Life:


Last week was the lobster mini season here in Florida.  The 29th and 30th and lots of people head down to the keys to go lobster diving.  You can keep 6 per person in the keys and 12 in all other parts of the state.

It's also the last week for the local school kids to get on summer vacation.  After this week things get real quiet down here for 2 months until the snow birds start coming back.

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

Fish the Moving Water

Whether you're fishing or simply watching wildlife, moving water is almost always more productive than still water.

Around the Indian River Lagoon, keep an eye on:

  • 🌊 Tidal creeks flowing into the lagoon
  • 🌉 Bridge pilings during a tide change
  • 🌾 Channels between seagrass beds
  • 🦐 Current lines where baitfish gather

Moving water brings oxygen and food, making it a natural gathering place for fish, dolphins, birds, and other wildlife. If you learn to read the current, you'll start seeing the lagoon in a whole new way.

Wildlife & Nature

A fair number of birds down on the water today.  A heron feeding on the shoals of bait fish swimming near the shore.  Staying safe from snook puts you into the birds mouth.

Most importantly I caught a nice little sea trout today.  First one in the time I've been living at Pelican Landing.  Yeah me!

Restore Our Shores

One of the most hands-on conservation efforts along the Indian River Lagoon is Restore Our Shores, a program of the East Coast Zoological Foundation, the nonprofit behind the Brevard Zoo. Their mission is to restore native ecosystems through practical, science-based projects that improve water quality and strengthen shoreline habitats.

Their volunteers work on projects that have a direct impact on lagoon health, including:

  • 🦪 Growing oysters that naturally filter lagoon water
  • 🌱 Raising and planting red mangroves
  • 🌿 Restoring native seagrass beds
  • 🦪 Building oyster reefs and living shorelines
  • 🌾 Installing shoreline buffer zones that reduce nutrient runoff
  • 🤝 Training residents to become active stewards of the lagoon

 

One of my favorite aspects of Restore Our Shores is that they make conservation accessible. You don't have to be a marine biologist to make a difference. Whether you're helping build an oyster reef, raising mangroves at home, or volunteering for a planting day, you're contributing to the recovery of one of North America's most diverse estuaries.

Spend Time Outside the House Before You Buy

It's easy to focus on the kitchen, bathrooms, and finishes, but don't forget to spend a few minutes standing outside.

Pay attention to:

  • 🌅 The direction the backyard faces for morning coffee or afternoon shade.
  • 💨 Whether there's a nice breeze coming off the water.
  • 🚗 Traffic noise with the windows closed and open.
  • 👋 How neighbors interact with each other.
  • 🚶 Whether people are out walking, biking, or enjoying the neighborhood.

 

A home is more than four walls. Sometimes the best feature isn't inside the house at all. It's the lifestyle waiting just beyond the front door.
