Today's Lagoon Life:

Well we have survived the 2 feet of rain received and I got out of Barefoot Bay yesterday even though it required me driving through water that is probably not recommended.  Today on Wednesday you can hardly tell it happened but there are still many road closures in the area.

This was the driveway when I left on Tuesday!

Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:

After the Flood, Watch What Washes Into the Lagoon

The November 2 flooding is a reminder that our streets, yards, canals and the Indian River Lagoon are all connected.

Floodwater can carry fertilizers, motor oil, sewage, pesticides and debris into local waterways. As water recedes, avoid swimming or wading in discolored water, keep pets away from flooded canals, and never handle downed electrical equipment.

Today's tip: Keep flood-damaged chemicals, paint, oil and household debris out of storm drains. What washes off our streets can eventually affect the lagoon's wildlife and water quality.

Wildlife & Nature

Unfortunately after a big storm the amount of plastic trash you see stranded on the shore is overwhelming.  Sure there's the big stuff but the amount of small indescribably pieces seems infinite.  When they talk about micro plastics this is what they mean.  You can see how they could enter the food chain and end up in us.  Please try and control your trash and keep it out of the lagoon so we still have wild life in the it.

Today's Lagoon Spotlight

Todays spotlight is one close to my heart as I volunteer a good bit for them.

Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA)

Based in Vero Beach, ORCA is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems, especially the Indian River Lagoon.

Its scientists study pollution, monitor water quality and develop solutions to environmental problems. ORCA also trains local volunteers as citizen scientists, allowing everyday residents to participate in water sampling, environmental monitoring and research.

Following major rainfall events, understanding how pollutants move through our watershed becomes especially important. Organizations like ORCA help provide the science needed to protect our waterways.

Why they matter: A healthier lagoon begins with understanding what's happening beneath the surface.

Lagoon Lifestyle & Real Estate

If floodwater entered your home this week, time matters.

The CDC recommends cleaning and drying flood-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours, when safely possible, to reduce mold growth.

Wet carpeting, insulation, drywall and upholstered furniture can trap moisture long after standing water disappears. Materials that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried may need replacement.

Before removing damaged materials, photograph everything for insurance purposes. Never turn on flooded electrical systems or air-conditioning equipment until qualified professionals have inspected them.

Today's tip: Don't judge flood damage by how dry your floors look. Hidden moisture behind walls and beneath flooring can create expensive problems weeks later.
