Good Morning from Florida's Indian River Lagoon
Good morning from Barefoot Bay along Florida's Indian River Lagoon in Micco FL. Today is Tuesday October 6, 2026.
Welcome to today's Lagoon Life Report, where we explore the weather, wildlife, waterfront communities, parks, local food, and everyday moments that make life along the Indian River Lagoon so special.
Lagoon Conditions
Time: 2 PM
Air Temperature: 84 and high of 85
Humidity: 79% - rain for the next week!
Wind Direction & Speed: % from the East
Tide Stage: 7 AM high and 2 PM low
Moon Phase: Waxing Crescent - rise at 3:13 AM and set at 4:42 PM
Today's Lagoon Life:
Rain rain and rain. We are in one of those patters where the rain chance is about 75% for the 5 days forecast and then some! So today I pull out one of my park tours and today I'm covering the municipal golf course here in town. A nice 18 hole course for reasonable rates, driving range and onsite academy. Check it out! A 19 hole/restaurant that is a good option after a round.
Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:
Give Something in Your House a Second Life
Lagoon Living isn't only about what we put into the water.
It's also about how much stuff we consume on land.
Before replacing furniture, appliances or building materials, consider the three possibilities between keep it and throw it away:
Repair it. Donate it. Reuse it.
Construction and household materials take energy and natural resources to manufacture and transport. Keeping something useful circulating in the community longer is one of those pleasantly uncomplicated environmental choices.
And unlike restoring an estuary, you can accomplish this particular conservation project before lunch.
Use it up. Pass it along. Let the landfill wait. ♻️🌎

Today's Indian River County Do-Gooder: Indian River Habitat for Humanity
This may be the best collision yet between our Real Estate Tip and our community do-gooder.
Indian River Habitat for Humanity has been serving Indian River County since 1991, helping qualifying families with affordable homeownership, home repair and home preservation. The organization says it currently serves approximately 100 local families each year through new construction and home-repair programs. Indian River Habitat
But there's another Habitat program I particularly like.
🔨 Deconstruction Instead of Demolition
Indian River Habitat operates a Deconstruction Program.
Instead of ripping usable materials out of a remodeling project and sending everything to the landfill, Habitat's team can remove salvageable building materials so they can be reused.
Those materials can then be sold through the Habitat ReStore, generating money to help build additional Habitat homes while simultaneously providing affordable building supplies to other people in the community. Indian River Habitat
That's a lovely little economic loop:
Old house → salvaged material → ReStore → new owner → money for another house.
Even better, Habitat says its Deconstruction service is free, and eligible donations may be tax deductible. Indian River Habitat
🛋️ The Store That Builds Houses
The Indian River Habitat ReStore sells donated furniture, appliances, lighting, home décor and building materials.
Habitat describes it as the second-largest Habitat ReStore in Florida, and proceeds help fund its housing mission while donations keep usable materials out of landfills. Indian River Habitat
🏡 But Habitat Doesn't Just Build New Houses
This part deserves more attention.
Its Neighborhood Revitalization program helps qualifying Indian River County homeowners with critical and minor home repairs, particularly low-to-moderate-income homeowners, veterans and seniors living on fixed incomes. Indian River Habitat
That's important because affordable housing isn't only about constructing another house.
Sometimes the most affordable house is the one somebody already owns but needs help keeping livable.
🏗️ And There's Something Coming Up
Indian River Habitat's Community Leaders Build is scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2026, when volunteers will help raise the walls on two homes in Gifford. The event is being presented by the Realtors Association of Indian River County, which makes this one particularly appropriate for our little real-estate-meets-community corner of the world. Indian River Habitat
I love the symmetry in all of this.
Real estate is usually about transferring ownership of property.
Habitat reminds us that housing is also about stability, dignity, neighborhoods and belonging.
And its Deconstruction program adds one more layer:
Even when we're tearing something apart, we can still be building something else.
That's not a bad philosophy for houses, communities or life. 🏡❤️♻️

Before You Throw It Away During a Remodel, See Who Wants It
Renovating a house often starts with a dumpster.
But that old vanity, set of cabinets, light fixtures, doors or appliances may still have plenty of life left in them.
Before demolition begins, check whether usable materials can be salvaged or donated. It can reduce what goes to the landfill, sometimes provide a tax deduction, and put affordable building materials back into the community.
Here in Indian River County, there's even a local organization that will help with the process, which brings us rather neatly to today's featured do-gooder.
Sometimes the greenest building material is the one somebody already built. 🔨♻️🏡
