Today's Lagoon Life:
Today I think I've come to the conclusion that Barefoot Bay is not for me. It's on the lagoon but not enough in it for me. I'm going to go look at a place for the second time today, Pelican Pointe down closer t the Wabasso bridge and close to where I was before. It has a pool, tennis, pickleball too but it also has a marina on the lagoon and a 9 hole par-3 golf course that winds through it that is free to play. Plus the property is laden with trees!
Lagoon Living Tip of the Day:
Plant Something Your Neighborhood Wildlife Can Actually Use
A beautiful landscape and a useful landscape aren't always the same thing.
When adding something new to the yard, consider asking one additional question beyond Will this look good?
Who else can use it?
Native plants can provide nectar, seeds, berries, shelter and host plants for insects, birds and other wildlife. Even replacing one purely ornamental plant with something ecologically useful begins adding little stepping-stones of habitat across developed neighborhoods.
And today's featured organization has been encouraging Indian River County residents to think about plants, conservation and landscaping for nearly a century.
Your yard doesn't have to become wilderness. It can simply become a little less useless to everything except us. 🌿🐝🦋
Wildlife & Nature
Pelicans using the dock as a perch to hunt and an osprey in the tree just beyond me. The shoreline here is a mess. Bamboo, Brazilian Pepper trees, Australian Pines....yowsa. All non natives and invasive.

Today's Indian River County Do-Gooder: Garden Club of Indian River County
Here's an organization whose roots in Indian River County go way back.
The Garden Club of Indian River County was organized in 1928, only a few years after Indian River County itself was created. Its mission includes educating the public about gardening, horticulture and landscape design, beautifying the county through civic projects and helping protect native plants and natural resources. That's nearly a century of people looking around their community and saying:
We can make this place grow better.
🌱 Gardening Is Bigger Than Gardening
The environmental connection here is easy to underestimate.
What we plant affects irrigation.
It affects fertilizer use.
It affects pollinators.
It affects birds and insects.
It affects what happens to rainfall before that water eventually works its way toward canals, creeks and the Indian River Lagoon.
In other words, landscaping is actually a collection of tiny land-management decisions repeated across thousands of properties.
That's pretty powerful when you think about it.
🌴 And They Throw One Heck of a Plant Party
The Garden Club also hosts Gardenfest!, its enormous annual garden show beneath the oaks at Riverside Park in Vero Beach.
Gardenfest brings together vendors offering Florida natives, tropical plants, orchids, bromeliads, fruit trees, palms, bamboo and all sorts of other garden treasures. Proceeds help support the club's scholarships and community outreach programs aimed at preserving, beautifying and improving the Indian River County landscape. Garden Club of Indian River County
And here's another reason I like featuring them today.
We've talked about enormous Lagoon restoration projects involving oysters, stormwater and conservation land.
Those things matter tremendously.
But environmental stewardship also happens one suburban yard at a time.
One less bag of fertilizer.
One native shrub.
One butterfly plant.
One tree somebody decides not to cut down.
Multiply those decisions across Indian River County and suddenly the humble backyard becomes part of a much larger ecosystem.
Maybe taking care of the Indian River Lagoon doesn't always require getting your feet wet. Sometimes it requires getting your hands dirty. 🌱🌊💚

More than 550 volunteers participated last year, tackling 51 projects around Indian River County. This year's projects include gardening, landscaping, painting and nonprofit campus improvements, and registration remains open through October 16 or until projects fill. unitedwayirc.org

Read the Seller's Disclosure Like a Detective, Not a Tourist
Buyers naturally gravitate toward the big questions: roof age, leaks, termites and air conditioning.
But the little answers can be just as interesting.
Look for recurring repairs, drainage issues, previous insurance claims, additions, plumbing work, electrical changes and anything the seller explains in the margins. Then compare the disclosure with the inspection and permit history.
A seller's disclosure isn't a substitute for an inspection. It's another layer of the property's biography.
Every house has a story. Your job is to read a few chapters before you buy the book. 🏡🔎
